Black History is American History

On January 1, 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed enslaved people in the rebelling Confederate states. On June 19, 1865, news that the war had ended and that all enslaved were free finally reached Galveston, Texas - the city where the last group of enslaved people was. It took two and a half years before the oppression of enslaved people ended. As much as it is a celebration, June 19th or Juneteenth is a reminder of delayed freedom and its promises for the Black community.
